What is an AFO Ankle Foot Orthosis?
What is an (AFO) Ankle Foot Orthosis? An "Ankle Foot Orthosis" is a brace specially designed to control the motion of the ankle and provide needed support for the ankles and feet; it is an advancement in orthopedics. There are different types of AFOs to suit the different needs of the patients. AFOs are made of materials that are strong and flexible enough to provide support as well as comfort to your foot. AFOs are generally made of lightweight plastic and are an L shaped brace with the upper portion supporting the calf and the lower part providing support for the foot and ankle. Various modes of control and support are accomplished by modifying the "L" shaped brace to meet the needs of the user. In earlier times, these braces were constructed of leather and metal and were affixed to the user's shoe, and were termed leg braces or short leg casts.
There are conditions in which a physician may suggest the use of this type of brace. In cases of severe flatfoot, arthritis of the ankle or foot, a weak ankle that does not support the body weight, or an ankle that becomes painful when moved, these braces are found to be very helpful. Even for severe ankle sprains, tendon dysfunction and other ankle-foot related conditions, AFOs have their application and provide the needed therapy.
Effective AFOs are designed in such a way as to fit the anklebones and control the movement. Recently there have been changes made in the materials and the designs of the AFOs. Advancements have been made in the way that they can be worn on the ankle and foot. The L shape is also modified differently with cuts in the shape. Current AFOs can be broke down into four categories. There are flexible AFOs that give dorsiflextion support, but do little for stabilizing the subtalar joint. There are anti-talus AFOs that block ankle movement, but just as the flexible AFO do little for stabilizing the subtalar joint; however, this AFO does assist in controlling the motion of the forefoot. There are tamarack flexure jointed AFOs that give support to the subtalar joint, this AFO may even be used in the case of foot drop.
Other uses of AFOs include the rehabilitation of the foot and ankle after being affected in an accident and the treatment of forefoot ulcers, which is common in the case of diabetic patients. This is in the shape of a "half shoe" and is designed to provide ten degrees of dorsiflexion. It is fitted with a heel that is elevated 4 cm to prevent the forefoot from coming in contact with the ground. This type of AFO is cost effective and has a high rate of patient satisfaction. An AFO for a diabetic patient is made of plastic material and is constructed with rigid ankle design and can be worn with a dorsal strap or without one.
AFOs provide a needed solution for people who are suffering with various foot and ankle ailments. They can give relief and assist in the healing of foot and ankle related problems.
