How to choose a chicken breed for backyard
Before raising chicken in backyard, you have to consider the chicken breed. Not All chicken breed can live at backyard. Some chicken do not want eat fresh green grass. So it is not good for your backyard. Your backyard will grow long.
Here are some factors that you can consider for backyard chicken farm.
1. Chicken breed.
Determine the chicken breed that you want. Some chicken breed such as white leghorn can lays up to 300 eggs in a year. You can also consider dual purpose chicken breed such as Rhode Island Red, New Hampshire Red, Buff Orpington, Plymouth Rock, and Others.
2. Pasture
Does grass grow at the backyard? Grass is important as chicken feed. The chicken can find feed below the grass, for instance, grass, bugs, worm and more.
3. The Climate
If you live at subtropics country like North America, You should select the chicken that can adapt in winter. All American chicken breed are well adapted with bad climate.
4. Backyard
How large your backyard. It will determine the amount chicken and the chicken breed. A standard breed chicken need at least three feet square. If you have small backyard, you have better to raise bantam type chicken.
5. Chicken character
Some chicken is not calm. They are easy to nervous. This kind chicken is not good for your backyard. For example, Sebright bantam can fly up to 10 meters. You need to raise this bird at closed range.
Select the friendly and docile chicken. It might be a good friend for you.
