Marans Eggs
The Dorking ad Mara chicken
The Dorking chickens breed is said to have originated in Italy and it was introduced to Britain around the time of Julius Caesar. The Dorking breed was mainly an ornamental breed used for showing and the first ever show to include the Dorking breed was in 1845. The Dorking breed was also used in the production of the Sussex breed and others.
The Dorking breed is a gracious bird and has a rectangular body and very short legs; the breed also has a large comb which makes them vulnerable in the colder months. The breed is versatile for both meat and eggs and produces a white shelled egg. The standard weight of this breed is 9 pounds for a male and 8 pounds for a female and they come in three traditional colours of white, coloured and silver grey. The Dorking breed is a docile bird that will fit in well in most environments although they may need to be protected in the very cold weather.
The Maran breed is a smaller breed than most others and is kept mainly for their eggs and to participate in shows. There are 9 colours and all birds have red or orange eyes and white feet. Ther Maran breed is a tough bird and one that isn't unusually susceptible to disease. They are incredibly active and enjoy free ranging and will if they can, escape from their pens. The Maran breed lay on average about 150 eggs per year and are also known as a good table bird. The Maran breed was introduced into Britain in the 1930's and continues to be a popular breed for both its eggs and as a table bird.
Many people like to keep Marais for their eggs as they are renowned for their egg laying capabilities and they are a nice even tempered bird which will fit in well with other breeds.
