Manufacture Your Own Hen House - Avoid Expensive Novice Mistakes
Successfully growing chickens can be entertaining, relaxing, and satisfying. The small backyard grower can conserve money while providing untreated meat and eggs for the relatives and building your own hen houses can save you hundreds when compared to purchasing manufactured versions. Once built, your hen house can be used for a lot of years and you'll have the pleasure of knowing you're growing healthy food for the table. Also, you'll have a perpetual resource of no-cost fertilizer for your backyard garden plot. What more could you ask for?
Once the hen house is constructed, keeping pullets is in actuality uncomplicated. You must feed and water your flock, gather the eggs, and do a little cleanup once in awhile. For pullets to remain productive as egg layers they must have a minimum quantity of light per day. Light penetrates the eye and stimulates the pituitary gland, which in turn secretes hormones that stimulate a pullet's ovaries to lay eggs. Pullets laying eggs are required to have about 14 hours of light per day. During the seasons when the amount of natural light does not reach this quantity, you have to add a light bulb to the interior of the chicken house to keep your birds producing eggs all year.
Sunshine is the ideal source of light. Your chicken coop must have a minimum of one, but if possible two windows to let light into the housing. The windows serve two purposes. First, they will permit sunshine into the chicken house. And second, they will provide a way of allowing fresh air to flow through the poultry housing. Odors can build up promptly in hen houses and a couple of properly placed windows will keep clean air blowing through. The additional air flow will also help keep the shed drier which is helpful because a moist coop is a source of disease.
When building hen houses there are various other important considerations. Make it facing south for the greatest sun exposure. Make certain it's in an area with good water drainage and that there's enough room for future expansion. You may start with only a few birds, but if you wish to raise more birds at some point in time you will need the additional room.
Build the pen so you can gather eggs from the exterior of the shed without distressing the birds. Automatic watering will save you a good deal of time, so this should be planned for prior to building. Building the hen house two feet above the soil with flooring made from wire will help keep it clean inside the hen house and also make it a simple chore to transfer the fertilizer to your garden plot.
