Backyard Poultry Tips Building Small Chicken Coops
Poultry Coops - considering the home made route
Poultry coops need to be safe and strong if you are going to have any success in keeping chickens, ducks or geese, but the good news is that you don't have to spend excessive sums on expensive homes for them. More and more people are saving money by building their own poultry coops. Not only does it save you money but it also allows you to tailor your coop to your needs and the amount of space you have available.
All poultry coops though, do need to follow some basic rules, but they are fairly simple. You will have to make sure you give your animals sufficient space. For examples chickens in a coop need around three square feet each to be comfortable. They can peck at each other a little when getting feisty anyway, but in a confined space they can end up doing each other serious harm.
The other vital task is to keep your animals safe from predators. Urban foxes are commonplace, racoons and many other animals will also be eyeing up your flock, so one area where you simply can't afford not to spend is on strong fencing. It needs to be dug deep into the ground to prevent burrowing animals, and tall enough to prevent easy climbing.
It's also important to consider that your poultry coop will also need roosts, nest boxes and feeders but again these don't have to be costly. A simple wooden crate or something even cheaper can still be a comfortable place for chickens, and ice cream tubs, with a bit of modification, can be a great feeder.
So if you think laterally, you can create a great poultry coop from lots of every day materials.
