What Automotive Repair Shops Are Up To
Most vehicle owners dread the thought of having to bring in their vehicles to automotive shops for repairs. This is not without good reason, often times the repair process can be a mystery to your average vehicle owner and have no real way of knowing wither or not they’ve been billed appropriately. Unfortunately, if the critical systems start failing due to wear or various parts become in need of replacement there is hardly any other choice but to have them checked. The main issue is that there are indeed shops that don’t inspire much confidence and this article is geared to discuss the many shenanigans practiced by various automotive shops today. It is due to these practices that have many vehicle owners thinking about purchasing their own parts and installing it themselves. It would not only cost less but would certainly make you less independent in repair facilities for keeping your vehicle in good shape.
It is rarely the cost of components that sends repair costs off the roof. Unlike haynes repair manuals, automotive technicians usually charge an average of $50 per hour and possibly higher for specialty vehicles as labor cost. The high cost of manpower is mainly due to the high cost of facility and equipment maintenance in addition to the cost required to pay off salaries, insurance and government taxes. In other words, a large percentage of your bill will most likely cover the cost of labor, something that most vehicle owners are unable to put in perspective. For instance, if you bring in your vehicle to have it’s disc brakes replaced do you know how long the job would actually take?

The concern is further complicated by the fact that few vehicle owners possess the skill and knowledge to visually inspect if a particular job had been done in good quality. For example, if you ask your technician to replace your vehicles alternator with an OEM replacement would you be able to determine for certain that it has indeed been replaced by a new one? Technicians may just as easily issue a refurbished or rebuilt one with the vehicle owner not knowing. This specific part may be installed deep within the engine compartment that it’s hard to do any visual inspection regarding the work done.
This is an area where trust becomes critical. You should be able to trust your 1965 jim dandy tractors and car mechanic with not only his automotive proficiency but the hope that he would treat you fairly as well. Of course, the best time to start looking for an honest shop is before your vehicle actually comes in broken.
