Gerber Legendary Blades, A Legendary Reputation
When knife lovers think of quality blades, one name springs to mind every time: Gerber Legendary Blades. This manufacturer of more than just blades has a long standing reputation of producing some of the most innovative and quality products. From fishing knives to multi-tools to a multitude of survival-oriented gear, what started as a venture into the knife manufacturing business has grown since into an icon of the industry.
In 1910, the Gerber Company was involved in advertising rather than knives. It was not until a successful gift-giving campaign for favored customers that the company shifted its gears. In 1939, Pete Gerber had a set of custom kitchen knives made for his customers, partnering with a local high-quality knife maker. The knives, combined with the packaging and other elements, were so popular that Gerber was asked to distribute more of them through a popular retail catalog. It was at this point that Pete Gerber abandoned the advertising business to enter into this new niche. In 1966, the company designed the Mark II Combat Knife. This product was soon to become the leading knife used by the military during the Viet Nam conflict. This very same knife, with some innovations, was in continuous production until 2000 and again reissued in 2008.
Gerber Legendary Blades uses the term "legendary" in their name for a reason. Their collaborations with some of the top knife designers in the world have created unique blades and superior craftsmanship. They were the first designers of both the bolt action and the push button locking systems. They introduced a variety of new technologies in the steel, handle designs, grips, and coatings of their knives and tools. The armorhide handle was one of their first innovations, back in the era of the Mark II, which allowed the knife to be more easily held while wet. Gerber knives come in various configurations and materials, including carbon steel, stainless steel, titanium, ceramic, serrated edge, fine edge, straight blades, folding blades, and many other details.
Gerber's rise and subsequent claim to fame started with their military knives but has since progressed in many ways. Mel Gibson used a Mark II in the film Road Warrior. Bear Grylls of Man vs. Wild fame uses a Gerber knife in his show. Aside from just the media hype, the long-standing and continuing reputation for excellence has produced a huge market for collectors of their knives, both old and new alike.
The second most popular retailer of multi-tools in the US, Gerber Legendary Knives still stands among the greatest knife-makers in the world. Their operation now employs hundreds of people, has diversified in its manufacturing to include many other survival tools, and continues to be well known for quality, innovation, and reliability.
