History of the Harris Tweed Jacket, A Men's Wardrobe Must Have
The Harris Tweed jacket is full of history. It began as a trade product and has advanced through the years to become a profitable brand that epitomizes comfort, durability, and style.
Tweed Jacket- Where the Tweed Jacket Began
In the 18th century, islanders in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland began to use one hundred percent virgin wool to create a cloth that could be used during cooler months of the year. The cloth was made entirely by hand and was usually seen in its natural color. This product was mainly used for personal purposes in a weaver's home, or it would be used to trade for other products that the weaver needed.
In 1846, the Earl of Dunmore's wife, Lady Dunmore, came up with the idea of manufacturing and selling the tweed products to boost the economy in Scotland. During this time, the economy had become stale due to the High Potato Famine, which caused millions of deaths because of failed crops.
To introduce this fabric to her home and land, she commissioned that the fabric be used for the family Murray tartan. Lady Dunmore then asked that some of the tweed cloth be made into tweed jackets for some of her wealthy friends and acquaintances both in Scotland and London. With the successful sales of the tweed jacket, she began to work on marketing this cloth to other areas. She also began working on changing the production of the cloth from entirely hand-made, to machine-made.
The success of this fabric came with a price. As royalty and rich landowners began to purchase tweed jackets for themselves, other manufacturers began to copy the look of the Harris Tweed. To ensure the protection of the real tweed fabric, in 1909 the Harris Tweed Association was formed. In 1910, the Harris Tweed signature mark was created and has been placed on every piece of clothing that has been produced since. The association and the trademark are able to protect both the consumer and the manufacturer.

The cloth that we all know as tweed was not originally called by this name. It was first known as tweel, the Scottish word for twill. There are several stories of how the name ‘tweed' came along, one of the most popular being about a London merchant who misread the handwriting on a form sent to him by a firm about tweel cloth. He then began to advertise and sell the cloth as ‘tweed,' and the name stuck.
The Tweed Jacket Today
Although some of the manufacturing has changed, the tweed jacket is still mostly hand-made on the four islands Lewis, Harris, Uist and Barra near Scotland. The cloth that it is made from is still one hundred percent virgin wool. Harris Tweed Jackets are sold all over the world now, are available in three different weights of cloth, and can be dyed almost any color. No matter what advances this industry takes, though, the history and stories behind this beautiful and luxurious fabric still make it unique.
